CFTC Provides Flexibility For Banks, Mutual Funds, Pension Plans, And Insurance Companies That Want To Use Single-Stock Futures

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has proposed an amendment to its Rule 4.5 that would permit registered investment companies, insurance company separate accounts, bank trust funds, ERISA pension plans, and similar otherwise regulated entities to trade commodity interests with notional values not exceeding the liquidation value of their portfolios.

CBOT Members Surpass 1998 Yearly Volume Record

The Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) today announced that its members set a new yearly total exchange volume record, surpassing the exchange's previous volume record of 281,189,436 contracts set in 1998. At the close of business on Friday, October 25, 282,576,220 contracts were traded year-to-date.

Following the start of the third quarter earnings season, Bahrain equities ended the week with a marked improvement in investor sentiment. The buying spree was evident in the local market as 22 stocks exchanged hands, out of which 11 scrips gained ground while only 3 dropped in value. With the gainers outnumbering the losers by a wide margin, the SICO index surged by 2.6% while the BSE index improved by 1.8%.

The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced the selection of Judge William H. Webster to be chairman, and Kayla J. Gillan, Daniel L. Goelzer, Willis D. Gradison Jr., and Charles D. Niemeier to be founding members of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board.

RTS, NAUFOR, GIFA And European Bond Commission To Draft Cooperation Agreement

During its current Moscow meeting (October 24th-26th) the European Bond Commission (EBC) has decided to draft a cooperation agreement between the RTS Stock Exchange, NAUFOR (National Association of Professional Securities Market Participants), GIFA (Investment and Financial Analysts' Guild) and the EBC. The purpose of this multilateral agreement is to promote the EBC-established standards of bond offering and trading in Russia.

NYBOT'S Coffee "C" Futures And Cocoa Options Contracts Set New Records

The New York Board of Trade (NYBOT®) announced today that it's Coffee "C" Futures contract set another new Open Interest record of 76,224 contracts set on October 23, 2002, replacing the previous Coffee "C" record of 75,800 contracts set on Thursday, October 17, 2002. Additionally, NYBOT's Cocoa Options contract also set a new record on October 18, 2002, of 96,054 contracts, replacing the previous Cocoa Options record of 92,803 contracts set on October 1, 2002.

The MSM witnessed a minor recovery during the trading week ended Thursday, October 17, 2002, to close at 180.66 points, which is 0.9% higher than the previous week's closing of 178.99. The index high/low for the week was 180.66/179.23. The recovery was led by the Banks & Investment (B&I) Sector stocks.
