São Paulo Stock Exchange Monthly Report – July 2004

Investment in stocks ended July as the outstanding component of the financial market. The Bovespa Index (Ibovespa) ended the month at 22,336 points, reflecting a 5.6% increase in nominal terms and a rise of 8.4% in dollar terms. In the year to date, total nominal appreciation amounts to 0.4%. Likewise, the Brazil Index (IBrX-50) increased by 5.1% in nominal terms, reaching 2,758 points.

New Record For Options Trading On ASX

The ASX options market has continued to reach higher levels of trading activity, with a new average daily volume record set in August. An average of 83,673 options contracts were traded each day compared with the previous highest average volume of 82,139 set in March this year. This represents an increase of 21% over the trading activity of August 2003.

NASD Granted First Temporary Cease And Desist Order To Stop Ongoing Fraud By Brokerage LH Ross - Firm Charged With Illegally Raising Millions Through Fraudulent Self-Offerings

Finding that L.H. Ross and Company, Inc.'s "misconduct poses an extreme threat to the investing public," an NASD Hearing Panel for the first time has granted a petition for a temporary cease and desist order (TCDO) to immediately stop ongoing fraud by a brokerage firm while an NASD disciplinary proceeding is underway.

Eurex Launches Options On Swiss Equity Synthes Inc.

On September 20, Eurex, the world's largest derivatives exchange, will be expanding its Swiss equity option segment and introducing options contracts on Synthes Inc. registered shares. This will allow investors to trade options on Synthes prior to the introduction of the shares in the Swiss SMI share index on October 1. One contract consists of 10 shares and has a maximum maturity of 24 months. Eurex intends to increase the liquidity of trading in the new product from the very beginning

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission's (CFTC's) Office of General Counsel issued a no-action letter on August 30, 2004, permitting the offer and sale in the United States of the Mercato Italiano Dei Derivati’s (“IDEM’s”) futures contracts based on the S&P/MIB Index (“S&P/MIB”)—the S&P/MIB Futures Contract and the miniFutures Contract.
