Barclays has released interim results for the 6 months ended 30 June 2001. Net interest income rose a good 27.8% from P90.8m to P116.0m. Other operating income continued to show strong growth of 31% from P46.4m to P60.9m. Operating expenses increased rapidly by 26.6% from P51.9m to P65.7m. Despite the increase, the bank's respectable cost : income ratio improved marginally from 37.8% to 37.2%. CBOE: July Index Volume Up 121% - Exchangewide Open Interest Up 73%

Total index option volume for the month of July at the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) rose 121% to 5,735,564 contracts (2,851,380 calls and 2,884,184 puts), from 2,600,544 contracts in July 2001. Total year-to-date index volume was up by 44% to 41,212,185 contracts, from 28,647,287 contracts in July 2000.

WCE Total Volume For 2000/01 Crop Year Reaches All-Time Record Levels

New all-time records were set during the 2000/01 crop year in futures and options volumes at WCE. Total futures and options trade combined during the August 1, 2000 to July 31, 2001 crop-year set an annual record at 2,854,331 contracts, surpassing the previous record by 20.4% which was established in the 1999/00 crop year.

WCE Focus On Canola Price Trends

Over the past few months, WCE canola futures prices have been trending upward, since April 2001, the nearby canola futures price has ranged from a low of Cdn$272.10/tonne in mid-April 2001 to a recent high of $363.00/tonne in mid-July 2001, a range of approximately $90.00/tonne. During the same period the nearby Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) soybean futures price (adjusted for currency) has gone from a low of $240.00/tonne to a high of $299.00/tonne, a range of almost $60.00/tonne.

The American Stock Exchange Announces Suspension Of Payment For Order Flow

The American Stock Exchange® (Amex®), announced that it suspended its exchange-administered payment for order flow in options, effective August 1, 2001. The Exchange instituted the payment program in July 2000 in response to competitive actions. The Amex said its decision would not affect payment for order flow programs conducted by individual specialist firms, and that the Exchange reserved the right to reinstate the program.

LIFFE Trading Surges Ahead 48% By Value On 2000

The London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE) traded £51,000 billion (€83,000 billion) by value in the first seven months of 2001, up 48% on the same period for 2000. Average daily nominal value year-to-date amounted to £346 billion (€563 billion).
