  • LIFFE Trades £14 Trillion Worth Of Contracts For First Quarter 2000

    The London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE) traded an average daily nominal value of £223 billion (357 billion) in March 2000 and traded £14 trillion for the first quarter, maintaining its position as the largest exchange in Europe by value.

  • Swedish Stock Exchange Trading To Be Exempt From VAT

    The cost of equity trading in Sweden on the OM Stockholm Exchange is set to fall following a decision by the Stockholm County Tax Authority on Friday to remove the value added tax (VAT) requirement on equity trading on the Exchange. The decision will reinforce the OM Stockholm Exchange's position as one of Europe's most cost-effective stock exchange. Furthermore, it will lead to competitive neutrality with most of the other exchanges in the European Union.

    A seat sale in the Index and Option Market (IOM) Division of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange today hit a record high of $385,000. The previous record was established March 27 for $345,000, replacing the $320,000 record set July 6, 1995. The current bid and offer are $345,000 and $400,000, respectively.

In his new capacity Balfour will take on the responsibilities for Nasdaq-Europe in addition to his current role for Nasdaq International.   • CME, LCH, LIFFE Initiate World's First International Cross-Margining Program

    The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), London Clearing House (LCH) and the London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE) on Friday successfully initiated the world's first cross-margining program across international borders. The cross-margining program enables the CME and LCH to provide substantial risk-based cost savings to clearing member firms and their affiliates who have positions in the CME's Eurodollar contract and LIFFE's Euribor or Euro LIBOR contracts.
