  • CME to list Mid-Sized Options on BFP Milk beginning April 12

    The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) will launch mid-sized options on its successful basic formula price (BFP) milk contract, beginning Monday, April 12. The options, sized at one-half of one BFP milk futures contract and representing 100,000 pounds of milk, will provide additional flexibility for risk management in the dairy industry and will complement the CME's 50,000 and 200,000 pound options.

    The volume of trade recorded at the IPE last month reached a new high, exceeding the previous record by a third. Total traded volume on the IPE reached 2,444,270 lots (almost 2.5 billion barrels), compared to the previous high of 1,831,612 lots (1.8 billion barrels) which was achieved in March 1998.

    Trading volume on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange rose nearly 24 percent above the previous month's levels to record the busiest March in exchange history, with 19.6 million contracts changing hands. March volume was up nearly 5 percent compared to March 1998. Trading in equity index products set a new all-time monthly volume record for the second consecutive month, as March volume totalled 4.65 million contracts.
