The Securities and Exchange Commission today instituted and settled enforcement proceedings against two major financial institutions, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. and Citigroup, Inc., for their roles in Enron Corp.'s manipulation of its financial statements. Each institution helped Enron mislead its investors by characterizing what were essentially loan proceeds as cash from operating activities. For the week of July 21st - July 25th, 2003, daily average trading volume of direct, indirect and REPO transactions on Order-driven market grew 79% and equaled 11 599 million rubles, up from 6 489 million rubles the previous week. The number of indirect transactions equaled 6 284; indirect transactions volume reached 4 275 million rubles, with 130 million shares changing hands. Internet trading accounted for 27% of total weekly trading volume.

For the week of July 21st - July 25th, 2003, daily average trading volume on FORTS (Futures & Options on RTS) equaled 577 thousand contracts and 4 098 million rubles, compared with 741 thousand contracts and 5 217 million rubles. The number of transactions reached 15 524, down from 15 926 transactions last week. Total open interest as of July 25th, 2003, increased by 8% in rubles and 4% in contracts and stood at 425 thousand contracts or 2 750 million rubles in underlying value.

CBOT® Sets Open Interest Records For Seventh Consecutive Day

The Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) announced that the exchange set another new exchange daily open interest record on Friday, July 25. The new record at 9,281,448 contracts surpasses the previous highs at 9,244,981 contracts set the previous day, making this the seventh consecutive exchange open interest record beginning July 17.
