The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) announced today that it has fined Ameritas Investment Corp., of Lincoln, NE, $100,000 and has suspended and fined one of its brokers for inducing customers to take on additional mortgage and/or home equity debt in order to purchase variable universal life insurance policies (VULs). Those policies were pitched to customers as mechanisms for funding college expenses and retirement.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced today that it obtained more than $25 million in civil monetary penalties and equitable relief in orders against Safevest LLC, a firm located in Mission Viejo, Calif. and its owners and officers, Jon G. The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged former American International Group Chairman and CEO Maurice "Hank" Greenberg and former Vice Chairman and CFO Howard Smith for their involvement in numerous improper accounting transactions that inflated AIG's reported financial results between 2000 and 2005.
