Botswana Stock Exchange Market Commentary

The market rose again to a new all-time high of 1,077.41. Volumes were depressed as only 3 counters traded but this should be viewed on the back of the bank holidays which limited the trading week to just three days. FNBB was responsible for the entire market gain by moving up 25t to P18.50 on 1,400 shares and closed firmer at P18.50/P19.00. Sechaba traded unchanged at P5.30 on over 300,000 shares. A total of 328,000 shares valued at P1,752,865 traded during the week.

LIFFE trading system gains access to the United States

The London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE) welcomed the decision by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to issue a no-action letter on Friday 23 July permitting LIFFE to grant direct access from the United States of America to its new electronic trading system, LIFFE CONNECT™ .

KLOFFE'S John Duggan Joins KLSE Group

The Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE) has appointed John Duggan as Group Advisor, Derivatives Markets. Duggan is presently the Chief Operating Officer of the Kuala Lumpur Options & Financial Futures Exchange (KLOFFE), a KLSE company. The appointment is effective August 1, 1999.

NASD Opposes SEC Approval of NYSE's Anti-Competitive Amendment to Rule 500

The National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. (NASD®), today declared its strong opposition to the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) approval of an amendment to New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) Rule 500. Even as amended, Rule 500 continues to impede competition for NYSE listings; it is unjustifiable, is clearly not in the best interests of the marketplace, and may be a violation of the anti-trust laws.

HEX commences legal proceedings against OM for trading in "Finnish" products

Helsinki Exchanges (HEX) has demanded arbitration proceedings concerning earlier agreements with OM. HEX claims that "Finnish" companies such as Nokia should not be allowed to have either their shares or share options listed on the OM Stockholm Exchange.

CBOT, CME and NYMEX Respond to CFTC Proposal For Change in Futures Contract Approval Process
