Canadian Securities Regulatory Structure At Critical Moment - Paper Finds Inconsistent Regulatory Strategies Block National Capital markets solution

Canada faces a diminished role in global capital markets unless a more effective securities regulatory structure is identified and implemented, according to a paper released today by the Capital Markets Institute (CMI) at the University of Toronto and the Canadian Foundation for Investor Education (CFIE). The paper analyzes current proposals for reform in an attempt to determine their strengths and weaknesses.

SEC Sets Hearings On Enron Corp. Applications For Exemptions Under The Public Utility Holding Company Act

The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced that it will hold hearings on two applications by Enron Corp. for exemptions from the provisions of the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935. Enron currently operates under an exemption from the Act by operation of law as a result of the filing of the applications. The new January 2003 Sugar No. 11 option contract (the "Jan/March contract") will have the March 2003 Sugar No. 11 futures contract as its underlying future, and will trade with a new commodity code of "SN".
