    Chicago Mercantile Exchange Inc. (CME) posted its best February on record last month, with 34.8 million contracts changing hands, an increase of 30 percent over February 2001 levels. Year-to-date, CME volume increased 35 percent and totaled 79 million contracts. February volume represents an underlying value of $3.1 trillion.

    Index volume continued strong growth in February at the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). Total index option volume at CBOE increased by 55% to 6,385,516 contracts from 4,119,189 contracts in February 2001. Open interest in all CBOE index options stood at 9,336,687 contracts (4,419,566 calls and 4,917,121 puts) at the end of February, an increase of 122% versus February 2001 when open interest stood at 4,212,555 contracts.
