Chicago Mercantile Exchange Plans Futures On Consumer Price Index - CPI Index Futures Will Be CME's First Contract On A U.S. Economic Indicator

Chicago Mercantile Exchange Inc. (CME) today announced plans to list electronically traded futures contracts on the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI). The new contracts, planned for 2004, will be the first product CME has listed on an economic indicator.

Trading activity on Chicago Mercantile Exchange Inc. (CME) during the third quarter of 2003 reached a total of 167.2 million contracts and averaged 2.6 million contracts per day, an increase of 8 percent over the third quarter of 2002. Excluding its non-traditional TRAKRSSM futures contracts, average daily volume for the quarter was 2.5 million contracts. Year-to-date, CME volume of 482.3 million contracts surpassed the 413.8 million contracts traded during the same period last year
