Statement By The IMF On Greece

Mr. Gerry Rice, Director of Communications at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), made the following statement today:

"Following on the Managing Director's participation in the discussions on Greece held in Brussels over the weekend, she briefed the IMF's Executive Board on the outcome as reflected in the Eurozone Leaders' statement published earlier today. The IMF stands ready to work with the Greek authorities and the European partners to help move this important effort forward."

After some 17 hours of summit talks eurozone leaders announced a draft agreement to rescue Greece.

The Greek parliament must immediately adopt laws to reform key parts of its economy - by Wednesday.

The eurozone has agreed in principle to start negotiations on a loan package for Greece worth EUR82bn-86bn.

The loan will come mainly from the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), the Eurozone bailout fund.
