The catastrophic effects of climate change are already visible around the world. From blistering heatwaves in North America to typhoons in south-east Asia and droughts in Africa and Australia, no country or community is immune. These events damage infrastructure and private property, negatively affect health, decrease productivity and destroy wealth. And they are extremely costly: insured losses have risen five-fold in the past three decades. The enormous human and financial costs of climate change are having a devastating effect on our collective wellbeing.

The financial community’s most important action with regard to climate change has happened in the last few years: many stakeholders in the financial industry, and central bankers, too, have realised that climate change is not an issue for next century. It’s an issue for now, and it’s a topic not only for other sectors but also for the financial sector and for central bankers and supervisors.

Equity options:

The first quarter of 2019 showed a clear continuation of the previous quarter with stock indices trending up and volatility trending down hovering around historic lows. There is ample cause to be cautious though. Europe still doesn’t know how Brexit will play out or how its effects and looming trade wars could affect the economy. Being cautious could explain the continued strong volume development of our equity options and futures segment in the first quarter 2019. The options segment showed a robust development versus the already strong first 2018 quarter with considerable growth rates in especially the Swiss, French, Dutch and Italian segment. Four Swiss equities Zurich Insurance Group, Nestlé, Novartis and UBS all lead the ranking in terms of traded contracts.

Euronext, the leading pan-European exchange, today announced that four of its market operators have been registered by ESMA as Benchmark Administrators under the new EU Benchmark Regulation (BMR). This compliance with the provisions of the Benchmark Regulation confirms the quality of Euronext’s governance and control principles and rules, today acknowledged by key European regulators: the AFM in the Netherlands, AMF in France, CMVM in Portugal and FSMA in Belgium.

EBA Closes Investigation Into Possible Breach Of Union Law By The Danish And Estonian Supervisory Authorities

The EBA has closed its formal investigation into a possible breach of Union law by the Estonian Financial Services Authority (Finantsinspektsioon) and the Danish Financial Services Authority (Finanstilsynet) in connection with money laundering activities linked to Danske Bank and its Estonian branch in particular. At a vote at its meeting on 16 April 2019 the EBA's Board of Supervisors rejected a proposal for a breach of Union law recommendation.
