  • Ethiopia Launches Securities Exchange To Boost Economic Growth

    Ethiopia launched the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX) on Friday 10 January, marking a major step in Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's efforts to open the economy to private investment. Wegagen Bank is the first company listed, with expectations of 90 companies joining over the next decade, including state-owned Ethio Telecom. Ethiopia previously had a securities exchange in the 1960s and 70s, which was abolished after the 1974 revolution. While the launch is seen as a milestone for local investors, concerns remain about foreign interest due to financial reporting standards and ongoing conflicts. Despite challenges, the move is hailed as a key moment in Ethiopia's economic evolution.

  • Alternative Trading Systems Operator Liquidnet Charged With Violations Of Market Access Rule And For Failing To Protect Confidential Subscriber Trading Information

    The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced settled charges against broker-dealer Liquidnet Inc., an operator of multiple alternative trading systems (ATSs), for failing to have necessary controls and procedures regarding market access, for failing to protect confidential subscriber trading information, and for related disclosure failures. Liquidnet agreed to pay a $5 million civil penalty to resolve the SEC's charges.

  • CFTC Staff Issues Advisory Regarding The Compliance Date For Certain DCO Reporting Requirements

    The Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Division of Clearing and Risk announced today it issued a staff advisory regarding the compliance date for certain daily reporting requirements for registered derivatives clearing organizations. The requirements were amended in August 2023. [See 88 Federal Register 53664 (Aug. 8, 2023).]  The compliance date for the amended requirements is February 10, 2025.
