Sydney Futures Exchange Expands Its Service Offering Following Strong Growth In Its Equity Derivative Products

Traded volumes in SPI 200™ futures and options at the Sydney Futures Exchange in July 2002 grew by approximately 23% and 12% respectively compared to the same month in 2001, influenced by a number of development initiatives implemented over the last three months. Interest rate futures and options also performed strongly, growing 36% and 95% respectively in comparison with the same month last year.

SGX Derivatives Break Monthly Total And Other Records; Year-To-Date Volume Grows 11%

Singapore Exchange (SGX) today announced that the total derivatives trading volume in July 2002 increased 67.5%, reaching 3,611,883 contracts, as compared to 2,155,944 contracts traded in the same month last year. July 2002's trading volume was also an all-time monthly record, surpassing the previous record of 3,372,838 set in November 2001.

On Tuesday, July 30, the President signed into law the landmark Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, which, among other things, would establish a five-member Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, the members of which are to be appointed by the Securities and Exchange Commission within 90 days of enactment, in consultation with the Federal Reserve Chairman and the Secretary of the Treasury.

Eurex, the international derivatives market, set a new worldwide turnover record in July: With more than 77 million contracts traded, the world market leader clearly surpassed its previous record of 74 million contracts in turnover from July 2001. Compared with the same month of last year (47.9 million contracts), Eurex showed a 62 percent increase in volume. During the first seven months of 2002, the derivatives market thus turned over more than 445 million contracts.
