    For the week of December 1st - December 5th, 2003, total trading volume on FORTS (Futures & Options on the RTS) reached 876 thousand contracts and 6 730 million rubles, compared with 906 thousand contracts and 6 326 million rubles the week before. Total open interest as of December 5th, 2003, grew by 5% in rubles and 4% in contracts and reached 4 986 million rubles and 766 thousand contracts.

    Based upon the figures until the end of November 2003, Euronext Brussels communicates the new monthly selection list for the BEL20® index. The first three reserve candidates are Telindus Group, Solvus and CMB. This list is valid for replacements that would occur from Tuesday 16 December up to and including Thursday 15 January 2004 after trading hours.

  • CBOT: Chinese Demand Determines Soybeans Strength

    After last month's trade spat, Chinese Premier Jiabao's visit to Washington on December 9 will probably be more important to the markets then any actions that the USDA might make on its December updates the next day. With no U.S. production update this month, export activity and South American crop prospects will be soybeans' focus for the foreseeable future.

    In advance of this week's Federal Open Market Committee meeting on December 9, the Chicago Board of Trade will be reporting daily rate change probabilities in the FOMC's federal funds target rate, as indicated by the CBOT® 30-Day Federal Funds futures contract. The CBOT 30-Day Federal Funds futures contract is a key benchmark interest rate barometer that reflects the forward overnight effective rate for excess reserves that are traded among commercial banks in the U.S. federal funds market.
