Australia: Corporate Watchdog To Watch Exchanges
Australia's corporate watchdog the Australian Securities and Investments Commission will be given enhanced power to audit the country's exchanges and report to the Government on how well they are supervising their markets, the Minister for Financial Services & Regulation, Joe Hockey, announced today.

ASX's Supervisory Arrangements

TASE Derivatives Market Advances
The average daily volume of TA 25 Index options reached a record 138,000 contracts in October. A daily record of 221,000 was set October 12. Since derivatives trading was automated in October 1999, daily volumes of TA 25 options have more than tripled from 30,000 to more than 100,000 in recent months.

Nymex Sets Date For Demutualization
The New York Mercantile Exchange today announced a target date of November 15 for its demutualization, which will make it the first exchange in New York to convert from not-for-profit membership structure to a for-profit structure.

Euronext Paris: Open Interest On Derivatives Markets Up Sharply In October
The number of contracts traded on Euronext Paris derivatives markets in October dipped to 21.4 million, down 2% from the previous month, but open interest showed a vigorous 32% rise to 28.4 million lots. Similarly, trading in equity and index derivatives was little changed, showing a decline of just 0.5%, but open interest was nearly 32% higher than in September. Trading in short-term equity options showed a healthy rise to 8.4 million and open interest surged 53%.

Cross-trading Link Between Singapore Exchange, ADX
The Singapore Exchange's Derivatives Trading Division (SGX-DT) and The Australian Derivatives Exchange (ADX) yesterday announced that they will begin detailed discussions and work to: establish cooperation that would enable their members and traders to have cross-access to the exchanges' electronically listed products, and co-clear such products - with a view to promoting greater liquidity and offering a wider product range for both exchanges.

CME Receives Favorable IRS Ruling, Plans To Become A For-Profit Corporation On Nov. 13
The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) has just received a favorable tax ruling from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS). As a result of the ruling, exchange officials have announced a planned effective date of Monday, Nov. 13, for its transformation to a for-profit corporation.
