HKEx's Derivatives Market Gets Sustained Equal Support From Exchange Participants And Investors

Exchange Participants’ principal trading and investor trading maintained a roughly equal contribution to HKEx’s derivatives market turnover from July 2010 to June 2011, according to Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited’s (HKEx) Derivatives Market Transaction Survey 2010/11. The survey also found an increasing majority of retail investor trading was online.

Audits of some large financial institutions just before, during and since the crisis resulted in 'clean' audit reports despite the serious intrinsic weaknesses in the financial health of the institutions concerned. Recent inspection reports by national supervisors have also criticised the quality of audits.

The European Commission has approved under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of a number of retail and commercial banking assets of Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) in the UK by Banco Santander of Spain. After a re-notification following changes to the previously approved operation (seeIP/10/1343), the Commission concluded that the amended transaction would not raise competition concerns, in particular because the overlaps between the parties' activities are very limited and Santander market shares will remain lowin the UK.

As previously disclosed, approval by the Commissioner of the proposed transactions is a condition to the completion of Maple's offer to acquire TMX Group.
