  • CFTC And SEC Virtual Joint Career Forum: Explore The Attorney Path

    WHAT:

    The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Offices of Minority and Women Inclusion will host a joint attorney career forum highlighting the legal work of each agency to regulate the market space and protect investors.

    CFTC Chairman Rostin Behnam and SEC Chair Gary Gensler will give opening remarks. Participants can attend sessions highlighting enforcement career opportunities; trading & markets and clearing & risk; and general law. There will also be a panel of SEC and CFTC employees sharing their paths in government. This event will conclude with a discussion about upcoming opportunities for early career and mid-career attorneys and a dedicated informational session for students and recent graduates.

  • EEX Sets New Record For Trading In Futures On Dairy Products In Europe

    EEX has registered a new annual record in the current calendar year in trading EEX Dairy Futures. As of 21 September 2022, the cumulative trading volume in 2022 (27,678 contracts = 138,390 tonnes of commodity equivalent) exceeded the total volume of the record year 2017 (27,564 contracts = 137,820 tonnes of commodity equivalent). Within the product range that includes also Liquid Milk, Butter and Whey Powder Futures, growth in the EEX European Skimmed Milk Powder Futures was especially striking.

    The Federal Reserve Board on Thursday announced that six of the nation's largest banks will participate in a pilot climate scenario analysis exercise designed to enhance the ability of supervisors and firms to measure and manage climate-related financial risks. Scenario analysis—in which the resilience of financial institutions is assessed under different hypothetical climate scenarios—is an emerging tool to assess climate-related financial risks, and there will be no capital or supervisory implications from the pilot.

    As announced yesterday, the Bank will carry out temporary purchases of long-dated UK government bonds (gilts), which began on 28 September. The purpose of these purchases will be to restore orderly market conditions, specifically in the long-dated gilt market. These purchases will be strictly time limited. Auctions will take place from today until 14 October.

    At EEX group, we believe that short-term intervention is needed to help both vulnerable households and the industry cope with these unprecedented price levels. Nonetheless, any intervention should maintain incentives to reduce demand and bring new supply to the market. Although in principle, we support the European Commission proposal for a Council Regulation on an emergency intervention, we fear the inframarginal revenue cap will be difficult to implement and have distortive effects if actual profits are not taken into account. Therefore, we are of the opinion that Member States should have the option to apply a solidarity contribution to the power sector as a more efficient measure to raise revenues from respective market participants.
