  • Nasdaq Concludes Record Volume Year As Demonstrated In Preliminary Year-End Results

    The Nasdaq Stock Market® closed down for the year, ending five consecutive years of record gains. The year 2000 was, however, a year of record volume. There were 47 trading days in 2000 where volume exceeded two billion shares traded on Nasdaq®. Share volume reached 439.6 billion, up from 272.6 billion in 1999—a 61 percent increase for the year. The market value of the more than 4,700 companies listed on Nasdaq ended the year at $3.6 trillion, down 31 percent from year-end 1999.

    Eurex, the international derivatives exchange, closed out the year 2000 with record volume of 454 million contracts traded, putting the world's leading derivatives market about 20 percent ahead of the previous year's total. The December turnover figures reflect the rise in trading volumes year on year: 35 million contracts were traded at Eurex during the last month of the year 2000, an increase of 28 percent over the number traded in December 1999 (27.4 million contracts).

  • Electronic Trading Volume On GLOBEX®2 Rises To Record 34.5 Million

    With trading volume rising more than 15 percent over 1999, Chicago Mercantile Exchange Inc. set a new annual volume record in 2000 of 231.1 million contracts traded, representing an underlying value of $155 trillion. The new record surpasses one set in 1998, when 226.6 million contracts changed hands. Electronic trading volume on CME’s GLOBEX®2 system rose 114 percent to 34.5 million contracts, nearly 15 percent of total exchange volume.

    Volume of 399.8 billion euros was traded on the German stock exchanges during the last month of trading in the year 2000, roughly 10 percent less than the month before. The total for December comprises 292.1 billion euros in equities, warrants and exchange-traded funds and 107.7 billion euros in fixed-income securities.
