Readout: US Secretary Of The Treasury Janet L. Yellen's Meeting With Premier Li Qiang Of The People's Republic Of China

Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen today met with Premier of the People’s Republic of China Li Qiang. The meeting was candid and constructive, and part of ongoing efforts to deliver on President Biden and President Xi’s directive to deepen bilateral discussions following their meeting last November. While raising issues of concern, Secretary Yellen discussed the Administration’s desire to seek healthy economic competition with China that benefits both economies, including American workers and businesses. She also emphasized the importance of the two largest economies closely communicating on global macroeconomic and financial issues and working together on global challenges, including debt distress in low-income and emerging economies and climate finance.

Marek Dietl, President of the Management Board of the Warsaw Stock Exchange, Elisabetta Falcetti, Regonal Director for Poland and the Baltic States at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in Warsaw, and Ruslan Magomedov, Chairman of the National Securities and Stock Market Commission of Ukraine, signed a memorandum of understanding on 6 July 2023. The event took place on GPW’s Trading Floor in the presence of representatives of the Ministry of State Assets, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy, the Embassy of Ukraine, BGK, PAIH, PARP, KNF and other institutional partners implementing reconstruction initiatives in Ukraine.

EBA Launches Public Consultation On Amendments To The ITS On Disclosures And Reporting On MREL And TLAC

The European Banking Authority (EBA) launched today a public consultation on amendments to the draft Implementing Technical Standard (ITS) on disclosure and reporting of the minimum requirement for own funds and eligible liabilities (MREL) and the total loss absorbency requirement (TLAC). These amendments aim to reflect changes to the prudential framework that came or will soon come into force and provide clarifications on the information to be reported in the insolvency ranking templates. The consultation paper also includes an updated mapping between disclosure and reporting requirements. The consultation runs until 18 August 2023.

Today, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen participated in a roundtable discussion with over 10 U.S. businesses operating in the People’s Republic of China, hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in China. Secretary Yellen recognized the importance of trade and investment with China in supporting American workers and businesses, given deep integration between the two economies. Secretary Yellen raised concerns, including barriers to market access, China’s use of non-market tools, and punitive actions that have been taken against U.S. firms in recent months. She also reaffirmed the U.S. economic approach to China, which remains focused on three primary objectives: securing vital interests pertaining to national security and human rights; pursuing healthy and mutually beneficial economic competition, in which China plays by international rules; and seeking mutual cooperation on urgent global challenges, including on the macroeconomy, climate, and global debt.
