Tokyo Commodity Exchange International Customer Trades Stays At Record High For The Two Consecutive Months

The Tokyo Commodity Exchange, Inc announced today that the June 2016 monthly volume of customer trades (combined sell & buy sides) originating overseas was 2,642,493 contracts, accounting for 52.1 percent of the total trades of 5,073,440 contracts. This is an all-time high ratio of international customer trades at TOCOM continuing for the two consecutive months.  At TOCOM, the highest volume of international customer trades (combined sell & buy sides) is 2,677,075 contracts recorded in February 2016.

This is the largest single action ever brought by the Kleptocracy Initiative, and a significant milestone in the department’s ongoing fight against global corruption.  The complaint filed today in federal court details the complex web of transactions these co-conspirators used to launder billions of dollars that they stole from the people of Malaysia.  We have several speakers today who will describe various aspects of this matter.

The OFR released today launched the U.S. Money Market Fund Monitor, an online charting tool to help users take a closer look at the portfolios of U.S. money market funds. Before we begin, I want to take a moment to mention Captain Robert Melton – a 17-year veteran of the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department who was shot and killed in the line of duty yesterday while responding to a call about a drive-by shooting.  Our hearts go out to Captain Melton’s family and loved ones, and to all those who are suffering in this time of grief.  This devastating loss is yet another painful reminder that our courageous officers put their lives on the line every day in order to serve the public – not only in times of heightened tensions or during ambush scenarios, but always.  The Department of Justice is committed to doing all we can to support our officers at every level and to keep them safe from harm – and we will continue to advance that work and to keep that promise even as we mourn the loss of our fallen colleague and friend.

Lynch announced today the filing of civil forfeiture complaints seeking the forfeiture and recovery of more than $1 billion in assets associated with an international conspiracy to launder funds misappropriated from a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund.  Today’s complaints represent the largest single action ever brought under the Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative.
