Marie-Louise Huth Named Chief Counsel In SEC Division Of Economic And Risk Analysis

The Securities and Exchange Commission today named Marie-Louise (Malou) Huth as Chief Counsel for the Division of Economic and Risk Analysis (DERA). Ms. Huth will lead DERA’s Office of the Chief Counsel, which provides guidance to the Chief Economist and other staff regarding legal issues implicated by the Division’s broad mandate. As Chief Counsel, Ms. Huth will be responsible for collaborating with staff from across the Commission on matters related to the integration of the DERA’s economic analyses into Commission rulemakings and other Commission actions. Ms. Huth will also provide guidance on a variety of mission-related legal and policy matters involving risk assessment, data analytics, and structured disclosure.

Trade Deal Hopes Unfulfilled, Optimism That Tariffs Might Be Selectively Reduced Lifted Commodity Prices Mid-Week Before Falling Flat, William May, Senior Economist, IHS Markit

Commodity prices, as measured by the IHS Markit Materials Price Index (MPI), fell 1.2% last week, their seventh straight weekly decline. Prospects for a “phase-one” US-China trade agreement, with a promise of selected tariff reductions, were enough to rally equity prices, lift bond yields, and even lift material prices through mid-week. However, strength in commodity markets dissipated by week’s end on President Trump’s statement denying reports that a trade deal had been reached.

Let me start by saying that my colleagues and I strongly support the goals of maximum employment and price stability that Congress has set for monetary policy. We are committed to providing clear explanations about our policies and actions. Congress has given us an important degree of independence so that we can effectively pursue our statutory goals based on facts and objective analysis. We appreciate that our independence brings with it an obligation for transparency and accountability. Today I will discuss the outlook for the economy and monetary policy.

Qontigo Appoints Stephan Flägel As Global Head Of Indices & Benchmarks To Lead STOXX Portfolio

Financial intelligence provider Qontigo, part of Deutsche Börse Group, has announced the appointment of Stephan Flägel as Global Head of Indices & Benchmarks, effective as of December 2, 2019. In that role, he will oversee Qontigo’s index business. Flägel will assume the role from Steffen Hermanns, who has announced his decision to retire in 2020, and will report to Holger Wohlenberg, Chief Business Officer of Qontigo. He joins Qontigo from Refinitiv where he also served as Global Head of Indices & Benchmarks.
