Finansinspektionen: Increased Cyber Security In The Finance Sector Is Needed

The financial sector must quickly become better at preventing and handling cyber threats. Customers and society at large must be able to trust that the critical services offered by financial corporations will function even during periods of uncertainty and in the presence of threats. As commissioned by the government, Finansinspektionen (FI) therefore has proposed a number of measures to increase resilience to cyber attacks in the financial sector.

Finansinspektionen has invited several banks to a roundtable discussion on Friday, 20 May, on the right to open payment accounts. The background is that the number of complaints FI is receiving from consumers who are being denied a payment account is increasing. Some also have their accounts blocked or closed.

U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen visited Warsaw, Poland from May 14-16.  In meetings with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Finance Minister Magdalena Rzeczkowska, Secretary Yellen reiterated the United States’ steadfast support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and welcomed Poland’s strong partnership in holding Russia accountable for its war against Ukraine.  The Secretary expressed her gratitude at the generosity Poland has shown in welcoming refugees fleeing Russia’s illegal war on Ukraine.  The Secretary also discussed the energy situation in Europe and investment screening.

SEC Obtains Emergency Relief To Halt Pre-IPO Stock Fraud Scheme By Unregistered Broker-Dealer - Defendants, Including Persons Barred From The Brokerage Industry, Allegedly Sold Shares They Didn’t Own, And Pocketed More Than $75 Million

The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced that it obtained asset freezes and other emergency relief against StraightPath Venture Partners LLC, StraightPath Management LLC, Brian K. Martinsen, Michael A. Castillero, Francine A. Lanaia, and Eric D. Lachow (collectively, the defendants) to halt ongoing securities violations, including allegedly selling pre-initial public offering (IPO) shares they did not own, pocketing undisclosed fees, and commingling investor funds, resulting in Ponzi scheme-like payments. The relief arose from fraud and registration charges filed by the SEC.

EBA Consults On Standardised Information Requirements To Support Sales Of Non-Performing Loans

• The EBA is proposing information standardisation to increase efficiencies of the secondary markets for sales of non-performing loans and reduce entry barriers for smaller banks and smaller investors.
• The proposed NPL transaction templates are built on previous voluntary templates and consider the experience of market participants from the sell and buy side.
• The NPL transaction templates are the linchpin for numerous initiatives under the December 2020 European Commission’s action plan for NPL in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

US Secretary Of The Treasury Janet L. Yellen Delivers Remarks At The POLIN Museum In Warsaw, Poland

Today, Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen visited the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews on the site of the former Warsaw Ghetto.  The Museum showcases the important history of Jews in Poland over the past thousand years and stands directly across from the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes, which commemorates the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Secretary Yellen delivered remarks and laid a wreath at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes.
