ASX Group Monthly Activity Report – April 2011

The value of ASX-listed stocks, as measured by the All Ordinaries Index, fell 0.6% during April. Other major markets rose during the month including the US up 2.8%, UK up 2.7%, Singapore up 2.2%, Japan up 1.0% and Hong Kong up 0.8%. The slight fall in Australian equity values coincided with a strong rise in the Australian dollar: up 5.5% against the US dollar, 3.9% against the Yen and 0.5% against the Euro.

Total trading volume at the Dalian Commodity Exchange, China's leading commodity exchange, for the month of April was 20,040,557 contracts, a decrease of 14.03% compared to April 2010. Average daily volume for this period was 1.05 million contracts. Trading turnover totaled CNY 1.33 trillion, an increase of 17.38% compared to April 2010. Trading volume for the 2011 reached 82.3 million contracts, 18.20% shy of 2010's total trading volume.

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today announced a multimillion dollar settlement with UBS for fraudulent and anticompetitive conduct in its municipal bond derivative transactions with governments and nonprofits across the country. UBS will pay $90.8 million as part of a coordinated federal and state enforcement agency settlement. Of that amount, $63.3 million will go to a multistate restitution fund for governments and nonprofits that entered into municipal derivatives contracts with UBS, or used UBS as a broker on such deals, between 2001 and 2004.
