IMF Brings Policymakers Together To Foster Cooperation On FinTech

Representatives from over 40 advanced and emerging economies and international institutions met in Washington to discuss Fintech, the impact of technological change in the financial sector. Ministers of finance and economics, central bank governors, and other senior officials came together at the invitation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to share experiences and discuss potential policy and regulatory responses.

EBA Provides Guidance To Authorities And Institutions On Brexit Relocations

The EBA published today an Opinion on Brexit to ensure the consistent application of Union legislation to businesses seeking to establish or enhance their EU27 presence in order to retain access to the EU Single Market. The Opinion aims at providing greater certainty to firms and ultimately at ensuring a level playing field. In the Opinion, the EBA addresses a number of relevant policy topics relating to authorisations, the prudential regulation and supervision of investment firms, internal models, outsourcing, internal governance, risk transfers via back-to-back and intragroup operations, and resolution and deposit guarantee scheme issues. The EBA will monitor how the Opinion will be applied in practice by authorities and will continue its policy and risk analysis work in relation to the challenges posed by Brexit.

I enjoyed Ben Bernanke's paper titled "Monetary Policy in a New Era." He presents a compelling diagnosis of the issues facing policymakers and discusses a variety of policy options. Bernanke proposes an approach to policy that is elegant and straightforward to communicate. I will focus on those elements that I find particularly relevant for the challenges faced by policymakers and suggest some implications and complications. My comments are not intended to address current policy.

CUSIP Request Volume Signals Slowdown In Q4 Corporate Equity And Muni Bond Issuance - Continued Volatility In Pre-Trade Market Highlights Caution Among Issuers

CUSIP Global Services (CGS) today announced the release of its CUSIP Issuance Trends Report for September 2017. The report, which tracks the issuance of new security identifiers as an early indicator of debt and capital markets activity, found mixed results this month. Pre-trade requests for new municipal bond and corporate equity identifiers decreased in September, while requests for new corporate debt identifiers increased during the month. This is suggestive of a possible decrease in new municipal bond and corporate equity issuance and an increase in new corporate debt issuance in the fourth quarter of 2017.

EBA Corrects Portfolio Identifiers For 2018 Benchmarking Exercise To Ensure Effective Data Validation

The European Banking Authority (EBA) rectified today Annex 1 of its Implementing Technical Standards (ITS) on benchmarking of internal approaches, which had been amended on 4 May 2017 to define the benchmarking portfolios for the 2018 benchmarking exercise.
