  • Readout: US Secretary Of The Treasury Janet L. Yellen’s Call With Canadian Deputy Prime Minister And Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland

    Earlier today, Secretary Janet Yellen spoke with Canadian Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. During the call, Secretary Yellen affirmed the importance of close collaboration between the United States and Canada on economic policy and national security. Secretary Yellen conveyed her priorities for bolstering recovery efforts and mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, fighting inequality and creating jobs, and forcefully addressing the threat of climate change. The Secretary also discussed the importance of the U.S.-Canada trade relationship to both economies. Secretary Yellen noted her interest in working closely with Deputy Prime Minister Freeland to advance mutual priorities through the G-7, G-20, and other international fora. Secretary Yellen shared her desire to work together as neighbors, allies, and trade partners to face the challenges ahead.

    • The S&P Europe 350® erased its gains in the final trading session, leaving the continent’s benchmark with a small loss for January. 
    • Energy led among sectors of the S&P Europe 350, while Momentum led among factors. Value and Financials were among this month’s underperformers. 
    • After calmer waters for the majority of January, equity volatility raised its head on both sides of the Atlantic as implied volatility measures rose to their highest since November.

    Another bottom left top right finish as the ASI ended the week, and month of January in green territory. The index kept a clean sheet all week, up +58bps on Friday, and +3.44% w/w. MTN +3.43% instrumental to Friday’s performance on sustained domestic demand, as the ticker recorded a new all-time high of N181.00. Equities ended the month +5.32% firmer. In USD terms (+7.10%), the NSE ranked 7th according to Bloomberg World Equities Index ranking.
