Today, the United States and the People’s Republic of China held the first meeting of the Economic Working Group (EWG), which serves as an ongoing channel to discuss and facilitate progress on bilateral economic policy matters. The delegations met virtually for two hours and had a productive and substantive discussion on topics including domestic and global macroeconomic developments. U.S. officials also frankly raised areas of concern. The meeting was led by senior officials from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and China’s Ministry of Finance.

Today, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced the filing and settlement of charges against Ceres Global Ag Corp. (Ceres). The order finds that in two months in 2016 and 2017, Ceres engaged in a plan whereby it would build very long positions in oats futures—contracts worth close to 3 million bushels, the speculative position limit for oats. Ceres simultaneously bought shipping certificates with the goal of reducing the amount of lower quality oats available in the market.
