Bank Capital Rules: Reform To Boost Risk Resilience And Lending To The Real Economy - European Parliament Economic And Monetary Affairs

Bank capital requirements must be strengthened to make banks more risk-resilient and the risk weighting of loans to small firms must be reduced to facilitate lending to the real economy, said Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee MEPs in a vote on Monday. Bankers' bonuses must not exceed their fixed pay, they added.

Hellenic Exchanges Group Q1 2012 Financial Results

The consolidated net after tax profits of Hellenic Exchanges Group in Q1 2012 amounted to €4.8mvs. €9.2m in Q1 2011, reduced by 48%. The net after tax profit per share in Q1 2012, after taxes and the valuation of bonds in the Group’s portfolio amounted to €0.09 vs. €0.14 in the corresponding period last year, posting a smaller – 35.7% - reduction, due to the gain from the remaining bonds in the Group’s portfolio.

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today announced the arrest of and unsealing of a 35-count indictment against Robert H. "Bob" Van Zandt for operating a massive multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme spanning years. A Bronx County Grand Jury indicted Van Zandt on two counts of Money Laundering in the First Degree (a Class "B" felony), two counts of Scheme to Defraud in the First Degree (a Class "E" felony), two counts of Securities Fraud under the Martin Act (a Class "E" felony) and 29 counts of Grand Larceny in the Second and Third Degrees (Class "C" and "D" felonies, respectively). The defendant faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the highest count. Dozens of New Yorkers fell victim to this scheme.

European Parliament Economic Committee To Vote On Limiting Bankers' Bonuses And Strengthening Banks - Economic And Monetary Affairs

The economic and monetary affairs committee has a busy meeting to look forward to on Monday 14 May when its members will look at how to make finance work for the benefit of the society as a whole. Not only will the committee vote on measures that limit bankers' bonuses and demand that banks lend more prudently, it will also decide on stricter surveillance of eurozone countries' budgets.

U.S. Agencies Clarify Supervisory Expectations For Stress Testing By Community Banks

Three federal banking agencies Monday issued a joint statement to clarify expectations for stress testing by community banks--banks, savings associations, and bank and savings and loan holding companies with $10 billion or less in total assets. The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the Office of the Comptroller of Currency clarified that community banks are not required or expected to conduct the types of stress testing required of larger organizations.
