Readout: US Secretary Of The Treasury Janet L. Yellen’s Call With Canada Deputy Prime Minister And Minister Of Finance Chrystia Freeland

Earlier today, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen held a call with Canada Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland.  The Secretary thanked Deputy Prime Minster Freeland for the close partnership on developing and deploying impactful sanctions in response to Russia’s renewed aggression against Ukraine.  Secretary Yellen and Deputy Prime Minister Freeland shared concerns that Russia’s actions undermine international law and pose a threat to the rules-based international order. Secretary Yellen expressed appreciation for Canada’s actions to address Russian aggression and reiterated that the United States and Canada will remain in close contact, including via the G7, to continue coordinating potential further responses.

Yellen held a call with United Kingdom Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak.  The Secretary thanked Chancellor Sunak for the actions the United Kingdom took on Tuesday in response to Russian aggression and noted that our joint actions will impose severe costs on Russia for its blatant disregard of international law and the territorial integrity of Ukraine. Secretary Yellen expressed that continued close coordination between the United States, the United Kingdom, and within the G7  reflects our unity and resolve to respond to further Russian aggression.

Reading the economic cycle is essential to implementing monetary policy. A key topic is whether employment is approaching its potential: the unemployment rate at which inflation remains constant in the absence of supply shocks (NAIRU). In Mexico and other Latin American countries, the sizeable number of informal workers makes it challenging to estimate the NAIRU. Since Mexico does not have unemployment insurance, workers who become unemployed immediately need to find a new job. The informal sector's flexibility allows it to absorb most of the people who cannot find a job in the formal labour market. As a result, the unemployment rate in Mexico is low and does not fully reflect labour market slack.
