Warsaw Stock Exchange: Investors’ Share In Exchange Trading - Summary Of 2007

At a press conference on 14 February, the WSE presented the latest statistics of the participation of investor groups in trading on the stock exchange in 2007. In the equity market, domestic institutional investors had the largest share in trading in 2007; in the options and futures market, individual investors had the largest share. The statistics also covered the NewConnect market launched in August 2007.

Equity Market

Domestic institutional investors had the largest share in trading in the equity market in 2007: their share was 37 percent, up by 3 percentage points year on year.

The share of foreign investors in the equity market grew from 31 to 33 percent.

The share of individual investors fell from 35 percent in 2006 to 30 percent in 2007. Although their percentage share fell, the value of trading of individual investors grew from PLN 111.3 billion in 2006 to PLN 135.4 billion in 2007.

The value of trading grew for all investor groups.

Futures Market

The share of institutional investors in trading in futures contracts reached the historical high in 2007: it was 34 percent of total trading in futures (compared to 25 percent in 2006). The share of foreign investors grew from 9 to 10 percent. The share of individual investors fell by 10 percentage points (from 66 to 56 percent).

In the options market, individual investors retained the largest share; however, their share fell from 71 percent in 2006 to 53 percent in 2007. Domestic institutional investors recorded historically the highest share in trading in options at 35 percent (up by 9 percentage points year on year). The share of foreign investors in the options market grew from 3 to a high 12 percent in 2007.

NewConnect

In the NewConnect market, individual investors generated 92 percent of trading in 2007 (the market was launched on 30 August 2007). Polish financial institutions accounted for 5 percent of trading while foreign investors had a share of 3 percent of trading.

Activity of Poles in the Capital Market

13.1 million individuals invest on the stock exchange indirectly via open-ended pension funds. 3.5 million individuals were clients of investment funds at the end of 2007. 1 million Poles invest directly on the stock exchange: 997 thousand investment accounts were in operation at the end of 2007, including one-fourth (240 thousand) active accounts.

The number of pension fund members grew year on year (from 12.4 to 13.1 million individuals) and so did the number of investment fund clients (from 2.1 to 3.5 million individuals). The number of brokerage accounts grew by 90 thousand while the number of active accounts grew by 20 thousand.

Internet Impact

Brokerage houses operated 293 thousand on-line accounts at the end of 2007; these represented 30 percent of all brokerage accounts. The share of on-line orders in all orders was close to 60 percent for equities, over 60 percent for futures contracts, and nearly 70 percent for options at the end of 2007.
