Vienna Stock Exchange Strengthens Position As International Listing Venue For Bonds

Date 24/11/2017

  • 2017: Another record-breaking year in number and volume of corporate bonds
  • Wind Tre S.p.A. lists largest high-yield euro issue ever on Third Market (MTF)
  • Over 400 corporate bonds of some 200 companies trading in Vienna

Before the close of the year, it is now already clear that 2017 will break new records in corporate bond listings, both with respect to the number of issues and the outstanding volume of the new corporate bonds. Today is the first day of trading of the AT&S hybrid bond with a total nominal value of EUR 175 million. The bond was successfully placed with institutional investors. It is the second bond to be issued by the Austrian semi-conductor manufacturer company on the Vienna Stock Exchange. At the beginning of November, the leading Italian mobile telephony company, Wind Tre S.p.A., selected the Vienna Stock Exchange as listing venue for its new issues consisting of fixed and variable-interest bonds in EUR and USD with an issuing volume of over EUR 7.3 billion. This is the highest high-yield bond transaction by a European firm in 2017.  With a volume of EUR 5.6 billion, the euro tranche is also the largest high-yield issue ever floated in this currency. All of the bonds mentioned have denominations of 100,000 and target institutional investors.

"A bond listing on the Vienna Stock Exchange is highly appreciated by institutional investors, because it is a sign of quality. The high standards of our services, the efficient listing process and our competitive fees put us on an equal footing with the major international listing platforms. This is also reflected in the record number of new bonds we have acquired for the Vienna Stock Exchange this year," said Christoph Boschan, CEO of Wiener Börse AG. "The further enlargement of our bond listings is an important part of our strategy. For this reason, we have increased our staff in the area of bond listings. This will help us to take better advantage of lively international demand and provide better support for partners in the listing process," explained Boschan.

We are now seeing the first achievements of this strategy. Currently, there are over 400 corporate bonds issued by around 200 companies on the Vienna Stock Exchange in the various trading segments. The most frequent users of the Vienna Stock Exchange as a partner for corporate bond issues are Italian and Irish companies.  Year to date, 71 corporate bonds with a first-ever total volume of over EUR 12.1 billion were newly added to trading on the Vienna Stock Exchange. These include 16 corporate bonds of domestic issuers (EUR 1.7 billion) and 55 corporate bonds of foreign issuers (EUR 11.1 billion).  This trend outperformed the previous years by far. In the past year, 48 corporate bonds with an issuing volume of over EUR 7.55 billion were newly listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange. Over EUR 6 billion were foreign issues.
