Date 11/11/2010

On November 3rd, the US Consul General for Shenyang Sean B. Stein and Agricultural Consul James Butterworth paid a visit to the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) and held discussions with DCE President Liu Xingqiang.

Mr. Liu offered the guests an introduction to the development situation at the DCE.  Over the years, the DCE has maintained close contact and cooperation with its American counterparts, and it has also had a close relationship with the US Consulate General in Shenyang.  As of the end of October, 14 delegations totaling 60 guests from American companies and institutions including CME Group and other major US exchanges, the American Soybean Association, leading futures brokerages and others have visited the DCE this year.  Mr. Liu told the guests that the DCE attaches a great deal of importance to improving its English website, as it is the window with which the DCE may communicate with the rest of the world, as well as an important platform that offers the DCE's international friends a broader understanding of the Exchange and China's futures market as a whole.  Mr. Liu also said that the interests of China and the U.S. complement each other, and there is a high degree of interdependence; the DCE is willing to make efforts to open up communication between the two countries, and he welcomes related US delegations to visit the Exchange and promote bilateral exchange and cooperation.

Mr. Stein confirmed the success of the DCE's efforts in opening up communication abroad, and he also offered his thanks to the DCE for its support over the years.  He said that the DCE not only plays an important role in China's economic development and opening up to the outside world; it is also a successful example of China's reform and opening policy.  Mr. Stein also informed the Exchange that the US plans to send 100,000 of its best students from schools all over the country to visit China's key regions next year, in order to promote cultural exchange between the two countries.

Mr. Stein arrived in Shenyang in October of this year.  Prior to his arrival, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission for the United States Embassy in Dili, East Timor, and as Consul and Principal Officer in Medan, Indonesia.  In Washington, he worked at the Office of Maritime Southeast Asian Affairs.  Prior to joining the diplomatic community, he worked for the Asia Foundation in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.   Mr. Stein graduated with a degree in economics from Georgetown University in 1993.
