Trading Volume In Equities On The Spanish Exchange Reached 115.355 Billion Euros In August, An Increase Of 75,7% From The Same Month In 2006

  • Some 2,886,304 contracts were traded on MEFF in August, an increase of 89% from the same month in 2006. Highlights for the month included the performance of the Stock Futures, with 474,761 contracts traded, and of the Mini IBEX Futures, with 272,524 contracts-- increases for the period of 190% and 165%, respectively.

  • A record for warrants and certificates was set during the month and the year: trading volumes in August reached 510 million euros, an increase of 211% over the same year-earlier month. The number of trades surged 181% in this same period to 82,215.

  • The volume of corporate debt traded on the AIAF grew 29.4% in August, to 90.40 billion euros.

Equities

In August, trading in equities on the Spanish market through SIBE reached a total of 115.355 billion euros, an increase of 75,7% from the same month in 2006. The number of trades rose 110,2% in the same period to 2.8 million.

The accumulated trading volume for the first eight months of the year climbed 61,5% from the same period in 2007 to 1.123.344 trillion; while the number of trades rose 62,1% in the same period.

In the ETF segment, trading volume reached in August a total of 235 million euros.

Warrants and Certificates

In August, trading in the market for warrants and certificates reached a total of 510 million euros, an increase of 211% over the same year-earlier period and the highest-ever trading figure for a single month. The number of trades surged 181% in this same period to 82,215.

The accumulated figure for 2007 reached 3.52 billion euros, up 86,5% from the same period in 2006 and breaking the earlier record. The number of trades rose 80,6%.

Futures and Options

Trading in futures and options on the MEFF market reached 2,886,304 contracts, an increase of 89%. Highlights for the month included the performance of the Stock Futures, with a total of 474,761 contracts, and that of the Mini IBEX Futures, with 272,524 contracts, representing increases of 190% and 165%, respectively, from August 2006. In the same period, trading in IBEX 35 Futures grew 57% on a total of 749,989 contracts.

The accumulated trading volume for the first eight months of the year totalled 27.5 million contracts, underpinned by a strong performance on the part of IBEX35 futures, with 5.8 million contracts-- an increase of 42% over the year before—and the Mini IBEX futures, with 1.9 million contracts—an increase of 83% in the period.

Corporate Debt

The volume of Corporate Debt traded on AIAF in the month of August climbed 29,4% from a year earlier, to 90.40 billion euros. The accumulated trading volume for the first eight months of 2007 rose 30.4% from the same year-earlier period to 740.50 billion.

New issues in August reached a total volume of 48.70 billion euros, up 26,1% from the same month in 2006. The total volume of new issues in 2007 reached 449.44 billion euros (+33% up).

The outstanding balance at the end of August to stand at 731.87 billion euros, 33% more than the year before.

SENAF

The volume of Public Debt traded on SENAF, the electronic debt market, reached a total of 4.11 billion euros in the month of August.
