Trading On The Warsaw Stock Exchange – May 2011

Main Market 

The value of session trading from January to May 2011 (PLN 105.5 billion) was up by 26.3% year on year. The value of session trading in May was PLN 22.8 billion, the second highest monthly value of trading in history after March 2011. Trading in May grew by 1.1% year on year. The growth rate reflects the high value of trading in May 2010 (PLN 22.6 billion) driven among others by additional transactions related to the IPO of PZU.

Since 4 May, the WSE calculates and publishes a new index: WIG-Ukraine.

The WIG index gained 20.5% year on year and 5.3% year to date at the end of May 2011.

NewConnect

The value of session trading on NewConnect in May 2011 was up by 306.5% year on year and stood at PLN 239.5 million. May was the second consecutive month when NewConnect reported historically highest trading. The value of session trading was over PLN 1 billion year to date, up by 61.8% year on year. In 2010, NewConnect trading crossed the mark of PLN 1 billion after nine months.

The NCIndex lost 0.7% year on year and 9.4% year to date at the end of May 2011.

Derivative instruments

Futures contracts: The volume of trading in index futures was 5.20 million contracts year to date in 2011 as compared to 6.37 million in January-May 2010. The volume of trading in share futures continued to grow dynamically. In May 2011, the volume of trading in share futures was the highest in history at 72.2 thousand. The volume grew by 120.3% year on year and by 106.8% to 294.1 thousand contracts in January-May 2011. In May, the WSE introduced futures contracts on Lotos Group shares. Currently, the WSE offers contracts on shares of 11 companies.

Options: The volume of trading in options was 83.5 thousand contracts in May 2011, which represented the second highest monthly volume after March 2011. The volume was up by 24.8% year on year. The volume of trading in options in January-May 2011 was up by 43.2% year on year.

The number of open interest in index futures, share futures and options was record-high for each instrument at the end of May at 124,8 thousand, 12.6 thousand, and 144.9 thousand instruments respectively. The number of open interest in all derivative instruments offered on the WSE crossed the mark of 300 thousand at the end of May 2011.

Structured products, investment certificates and ETF 

ETF: The value of trading in WIG20 ETF was PLN 26.7 million in May 2011 and PLN 119 million year to date. Since 31 May, the WSE lists two new ETFs which track the indices DAX and S&P500.

Structured products and investment certificates: The value of trading in investment certificates and structured products was PLN 43 million (structured products: PLN 31.5 million; investment certificates: PLN 11.4 million). Trading in structured products in January-May 2011 grew by 22.8% and trading in certificates grew by 38.9% year on year.

Fixed-income instruments

          Catalyst

The value of session trading on Catalyst was PLN 86.5 million in May 2011 and PLN 454.9 million in January-May 2011, as compared to PLN 134.4 million in May 2010 and PLN 603.7 million in January-May 2010. The value of bond issues (corporate, municipal and mortgage bonds) was PLN 28.7 billion at the end of May 2011, up by 74% year on year.

          Treasury BondSpot Poland

The value of cash transactions in May 2011 grew by 59% year on year while the value of conditional transactions increased from PLN 10.1 billion to PLN 91.4 billion (up by 802%). The value of cash transactions was PLN 112.4 billion in January-May 2011 (up by 125.7% year on year) and the value of conditional transactions was PLN 350.8 billion (up by 604.4%).

The WSE held 21 trading sessions in May 2011 (as compared to 20 sessions in May 2010).
