Trading On The Warsaw Stock Exchange : January 2013

  • The value of session trading in shares on the Main Market was PLN 20.9 billion in January 2013, an increase of 17.6% year on year.
  • Total trading in shares on the Main Market reached PLN 30.5 billion in January 2013, the second highest monthly total value of trading in the history of the WSE.
  • The value of non-Treasury bond issues on Catalyst was PLN 54.2 billion at the end of January 2013, an increase of 35.3%; the value of session trading increased by 83.1% year on year.
  • The value of cash and spot transactions on Treasury BondSpot Poland was PLN 82.5 billion in January 2013 (a decrease of 7.4% YoY).
  • The total volume of trading in electricity on the WSE Group markets (spot and forward transactions) increased almost three-fold year on year to 9.3 TWh in January 2013.

Equities Market[1]

Main Market

The total value of trading was PLN 30.5 billion in January 2013, an increase of 67.3% year on year. Owing to high turnover of both session and block trades, this is the second highest monthly total value of trading since the start of trade on the WSE.
The value of session trading in shares on the Main Market was PLN 20.9 billion in January 2013, an increase of 17.6% year on year. It is the highest monthly value of session trading since September 2011.

The average daily value of session trading on the WSE’s Main Market was PLN 949.5 million in January 2013, an increase of 12.3% year on year. The average daily number of session transactions decreased by 9.0% year on year (from 51.9 thousand to 47.2 thousand).
The WIG index gained 14.4% year on year and lost 1.3% year to date at the end of January 2013.

NewConnect

The total value of session trading on NewConnect was PLN 82.3 million in January 2013, an increase of 18.0% year on year. The total value of trading increased by 13.4% from PLN 76.1 million in January 2012 to PLN 86.4 million in January 2013.

The average daily value of session trading was PLN 3.7 million in January 2013, an increase of 12.7% year on year. The number of session transactions increased from 56.4 thousand in January 2012 to 71.0 thousand in January 2013 (+25.7%). The average daily number of session transactions increased by 20.0% (from 2.7 thousand to 3.2 thousand).

The NCIndex grained 1.4% year to date and lost 18.4% year on year at the end of January 2013.

Derivative Instruments Market

Futures contracts: The monthly volume of trading in index futures was 0.6 million contracts in January 2013, a decrease of 21.4% year on year. The number of open interest in index futures was 110.1 thousand at the end of January 2013, a decrease of 9.4% year on year.

Options: The volume of trading in WIG20 index options was 49.4 thousand in January 2013, an increase of 39.6% year on year (35.4 thousand in January 2012).

Debt Instruments Market

Catalyst

The issue value of listed series (corporate, municipal and mortgage bonds) stood at PLN 54.2 billion at the end of January 2013 compared to PLN 40.1 billion in January 2012 (an increase of 35.3%). The monthly value of session trading increased by 83.1% from PLN 86.8 million in January 2012 to PLN 158.9 million in January 2013. The number of session transactions in January 2013 more than doubled and reached 5.8 thousand compared to 2.7 thousand in January 2012.

Treasury BondSpot Poland

The value of cash transactions on Treasury BondSpot Poland decreased by 7.3% year on year to PLN 37.2 billion in January 2013. The value of conditional transactions was PLN 45.4 billion in January 2013 compared to PLN 49.0 billion in January 2012.

Structured Instruments Market

Structured products and investment certificates: The value of trading in structured products and investment certificates increased by over 50% from PLN 21.7 million in January 2012 to PLN 32.8 million in January 2013. 

ETFs: The value of trading in ETFs was PLN 10.2 million in January 2013 compared to PLN 29.0 million in January 2012.

Commodity Market[2]

Electricity: The volume of forward transactions on the WSE Group electricity markets reached 7.3 TWh in January 2013, more than a four-fold increase compared to 1.6 TWh in January 2012. The volume of spot transactions in electricity increased from 1.8 TWh in January 2012 to 2.0 TWh in January 2013 (an increase of 8.6%).

Property rights: The monthly volume of trading in property rights decreased by 28.0% year on year in January 2013 from 4.7 TWh to 3.4 TWh.

The WSE held 22 trading sessions in January 2013, one more than in January 2012.
