Trading On The Warsaw Stock Exchange - February 2013

  • The value of total trading on the Main Market was PLN 16.6 billion in February 2013, a decrease of 22.2% year on year.

  • The volume of forward transactions on the WSE Group electricity markets reached 12.1 TWh in February 2013, more than a five-fold increase compared to 2.1 TWh in February 2012.
  • The monthly volume of trading in property rights increased by 70.5% year on year in February 2013 from 9.0 TWh to 15.3 TWh.

Equities Market1)

Main Market

The total value of trading was PLN 16.6 billion in February 2013, a decrease of 22.2% year on year. At the same time, turnover on the Main Market in January-February 2013 was 19.1% higher than the total value of trading in January-February 2012.

The value of session trading in shares on the Main Market was PLN 16.1 billion in February 2013, a decrease of 10.6% year on year. The incremental value of session trading increased from PLN 35.7 billion in 2012 to PLN 37.0 billion in 2013 (an increase of 3.4%).

The incremental average daily value of session trading on the WSE’s Main Market was PLN 880.0 million in January-February 2013, an increase of 3.4% year on year. The average daily number of session transactions decreased by 25.3% year on year in February 2013 (from 59.1 thousand to 44.1 thousand).

The WIG index gained 11.4% year on year and lost 2.5% year to date at the end of February 2013.

NewConnect

The total value of session trading on NewConnect was PLN 90.5 million in February 2013, a decrease of 49.7% year on year. The incremental total value of trading was PLN 176.8 million in January-February 2013, a decrease of 30.9% year on year.

The incremental average daily value of session trading was PLN 3.7 million in January-February 2013, a decrease of 34.1% year on year. The number of session transactions decreased by 10.9% from 3.6 thousand in January-February 2012 to 3.2 thousand in January-February 2013.

The NCIndex lost 0.6% year to date and lost 22.7% year on year at the end of February 2013.

Derivative Instruments Market2)

Futures contracts: The monthly volume of trading in single-stock futures increased by 50.9% year on year in February 2013 (from 43.2 thousand contracts to 65.2 thousand contracts). The volume of trading in index futures decreased by 13.8% year on year from 687.7 thousand contracts to 593.1 thousand contracts. The number of open interest in index futures was 117.3 thousand at the end of February 2013, a decrease of 11.5% year on year; the number of open interest in single-stock futures increased by 51.1% from 12.4 thousand contracts in February 2012 to 18.7 thousand contracts in February 2013.

Options: The volume of trading in WIG20 index options was 62.4 thousand in February 2013, an increase of 44.6% year on year (43.1 thousand in February 2012). The incremental volume of trading in options increased by 42.3% from 78.5 thousand options in 2012 to 111.8 thousand options in 2013.

Catalyst

The issue value of listed series (corporate, municipal and mortgage bonds) stood at PLN 54.1 billion at the end of February 2013 compared to PLN 40.1 billion in February 2012 (an increase of 34.8%). The monthly value of total trading increased by 114.1% from PLN 145.7 million in February 2012 to PLN 311.9 million in February 2013. The incremental number of session transactions on Catalyst year to date in 2013 increased by 52.3% year on year from 6.7 thousand to 10.2 thousand.

Treasury BondSpot Poland

The value of cash transactions on Treasury BondSpot Poland decreased by 7.6% year on year to PLN 29.9 billion in February 2013. The value of conditional transactions was PLN 30.1 billion in February 2013 compared to PLN 42.4 billion in February 2012.

Structured Instruments Market

Structured products and investment certificates: The aggregate value of trading in structured products and investment certificates increased by over 48% from PLN 16.5 million in February 2012 to PLN 24.4 million in February 2013. 

ETFs: The value of trading in ETFs was PLN 17.9 million in January-February 2013 compared to PLN 69.2 million in January-February 2012.

Commodity Market3)

Electricity: The volume of forward transactions on the WSE Group electricity markets reached 12.1 TWh in February 2013, more than a five-fold increase compared to 2.1 TWh in February 2012. The volume of spot transactions in electricity decreased from 2.1 TWh in February 2012 to 1.8 TWh in February 2013 (a decrease of 15.1%).

Property rights: The monthly volume of trading in property rights increased by 70.5% year on year in February 2013 from 9.0 TWh to 15.3 TWh.

The WSE held 20 trading sessions in February 2013, one less than in February 2012.
