Total Volume At NYBOT Breaks 40 Million Contracts - YTD Options Volume Up 39%

Total futures and options year-to date (YTD) volume at the New York Board of Trade® (NYBOT®), the world’s leading “soft” commodity exchange, broke through the 40 million contract mark during the month of November, reaching 41,391,710 contracts – up 20% YTD and nearly seven million contracts more than the same period from 2005. The November 2006 monthly volume was 3,646,822 contracts, up 23% versus the November 2005 monthly volume.

The options complex at NYBOT also saw significant growth during the month, as YTD options volume jumped 39%, with a total of 11,008,161 contracts changing hands. The Exchange’s Sugar No. 11sm (symbol SB) options contract is up 98% YTD.

On November 14, trading volume in NYBOT’s Cotton No. 2sm (symbol CT) futures contract set a new daily futures volume record of 61,464 contracts. The previous high was 55,376 futures contracts, established May 31, 2006. The cotton futures contract also hit an open interest record of 186,243 contracts on November 6, 2006, surpassing the earlier record of 185,674 contracts registered October 18, 2006.

Additionally, on November 17, 2006, two NYBOT seats sold for $1,335,000, followed by another sale for $1,400,000, a new record. The previous high for a NYBOT seat was $1,100,000, set on November 14, 2006.

YTD category increases for NYBOT products through the end of November include: Total Ag Futures (up 16%), Currency Futures (up 8%), and Total Futures (up 15%); options increases are: Ag Options (up 41%), Currency Options (up 19%), and Total Options (up 39%).

  • Cocoa (symbol CC) futures (up 23%)
  • Sugar No. 11sm (symbol SB) contract (up 17%) and options (up 98%). Options on Future Spreads (OFS) contract volume in sugar grew 215%.
  • Cotton No. 2sm (symbol CT) futures (up 16%)
  • Coffee “C”® (symbol KC) futures (up 10%) and options (15%)
  • Frozen Concentrated Orange Juice (symbol OJ) futures (up 8%) and options (up 3%)
  • U.S. Dollar Index® (symbol DX) futures (up 7%)
  • Wood Pulp (symbol P) futures (up 15%)
