This independent report by Ares & Co, commissioned by TheCityUK, examines the factors impacting SMEs' access to finance.

The report analyses the difficulties that currently exist in the UK, extending to France, Germany, Spain and Italy, and attempts to identify the root causes of these difficulties where they exist.

The report found that while banks remain SMEs' primary source of external financing, too fast an introduction of new capital and liquidity requirements risk prolonging the economic slowdown. Among the recommendations, we urge policymakers to consider further policy measures which are common across other EU member states, in addition to the Funding for Lending Scheme and the British Business Bank, to stimulate growth and protect jobs.
