The Spanish Stock Exchange Traded €74.72 Billion In April, The Best Month Since Last October - Monthly Trading Statements For BME Markets - Equity Trading Volume In April Increased By 23.2% From The Previous Month

  • In April the Spanish stock exchange traded 10.17 billion shares, which represents a 4.7% increase on the previous month and a 12.5% rise from the same month a year earlier.
  • BME's Derivatives market posted trading volume of 5.8 million contracts in April. Highlights include Options on Stocks, with 2.3 million contracts traded, up 53% from the same period a year earlier.
  • The number of trades on the ETF segment in April was up 158% on the same period last year, a record high on this segment.
  • Corporate Debt trading in April doubled last year's figure for same period.

Equities

In April trading in equities on the Spanish market amounted to €74.72 bn, which represents a 23.2% rise on the previous month and is the highest figure since last October. The trading volume from January to April totalled €259.34 bn, down 48% from the same period in 2008. 

In April the number of shares traded on the Spanish market amounted to 10.17 billion, up 4.7% from the previous month and up 12.5% on the same month in 2008. In addition to this, it is the highest monthly figure in 2009. 

The number of equity trades in April was the highest on average in the year, at 2.6 million, down 8.3% from the same month last year's. The number of trades in the first four months of the year totalled 10 million. 

The trading volume posted by the ETF segment in April was 158% up on the same month in 2008 and represent a monthly record high on this segment. The number of trades to the end of April was 73.3% up on last year's. The trading volume was €254.6 million, up 48.4% from the previous month and the trading volume in the first four months of the year totalled €858.9 million. 

Futures and Options

In April trading on MEFF, BME's Derivatives Market, came in at 5.8 million contracts. Highlights include Options on Stocks, with 2.3 million contracts traded, up 53% from the same period a year earlier and Mini IBEX Futures, at 298,770 contracts, up 25% year on year. 

The trading volume on this market to the end of April totaled 30.1 million contracts, up 23% from the same period in 2008. Highlights include Options on Stocks, up 96% from a year earlier, at 10.3 million contracts, and Futures on Stocks, up 20% from a year earlier, at 15.3 million contracts. 

Warrants and Certificates

The volume of warrants admitted to trading between January and April was 2,958. 

Trading volumes in April on the warrants and certificates market came in at €177.4 million, up 2.6% from the previous month and the number of trades was 35,997.

The trading volume to the end of April totalled €676 million, down 41.5% on 2008.  The number of trades decreased by 39.3% during the same period to 135,481. 

Corporate Debt

Corporate Debt trading in April came in at €347.14 bn, up 116.8% from a year earlier. The trading volume from January to April totalled €1.34 trillion, up 172.6% from the same period a year earlier. 

The number of trades in April was 76,987, up 16% on the same month in 2008. The number of trades in the first four months of the year totalled 298,544, up 17.6% from the same period a year earlier.

New issues in April came in at €34.3 bn, down 30.7% from the same month a year earlier. The volume of new issues from January to April totalled €161.32, down 5.8% from the same period a year earlier.

The outstanding balance at the end of April was €862.13bn, up 9.4% from April 2008.
