The Spanish Stock Exchange Traded €1.04 Trillion In 2010, Up 16% Year On Year - BME Markets Monthly And Yearly Report

In 2010, the number of equity trades totaled 40.5 million, up 28% from 2009 and a yearly record high

Equities

The equity trading volume on the Spanish Stock Exchange in 2010 totalled €1.03 trillion, up 16% year on year. The trading volume in December was €71.54 billion, down 13.6% from a year earlier.

The number of trades in 2010 totalled 40.5 million, up 28% year on year. In December the number of trades was 3.4 million, up 45% from the same period in 2009.

As for the ETF segment, the trading volume in 2010 totalled €5.96 billion, up 72% year on year. In December the trading volume was €182 million, down 40% on December 2009.

The total number of trades in ETFs in 2010 reached 63,154, up 24.3% from 2009. The number of trades in December totaled 3,050, down 23.1% from the same period in 2009.

Futures and options

In December trading on MEFF, BME’s Derivatives Market, came in at 9.06 million contracts, a monthly record high in 2010.

In 2010 there was heavy trading in index futures, at 9.8 million contracts, a 14.8% year on year increase and in options on stocks, at 37.6 million contracts, up 5.8% year on year. The total trading volume reached 70.2 million contracts, down 24.5% year on year, due to lower trading in stock futures and in IBEX 35 options.

In nominal terms, trading in 2010 totalled €789.11 billion, a year on year increase of 12.9%. The number of trades in 2010 totalled 5.6 million, up 17% year on year.

Warrants and Certificates

The number of warrants admitted to trading in 2010 was 8,199, up 13.3 year on year.

The trading volume in December on the warrants and certificates market came in at €118 million, up 13.8% year on year. The number of trades in December was 25,239, up 16.7% from the same month a year earlier.

In 2010, the trading volume in this segment totaled €1.62 billion, down 10% year on year while the number of trades was 348,010, down 2.95% from 2010.

Corporate Debt

The trading volume on the Corporate Debt market in December came in at €577.21 billion, a record high and a 81% increase year on year. In 2010 the trading volume totaled €3.65 trillion, down 0.9% year on year.

New issues in December came in at €17.81 billion, down 17.8% from the same period a year earlier. In 2010 new issues totalled €223.44 billion, down 42.5% year on year.

The outstanding balance at the end of 2010 was €850.18 billion, down 2.4% from a year earlier.

In 2010 trading on BME’s Public Debt electronic platform reached €239.06 billion, up 68.7% year on year.
