The Spanish Exchange Traded €383.191 Billion In The First Quarter Of 2008 - Corporate Debt Trading In March In Excess Of €118 Billion, Up 23.8% - Derivatives: Record High To March With 2.1 Million Operations And 169 Million Orders

The Sistema de Interconexión Bursátil Español (SIBE) traded €383.19 billion in equities during the period January to March 2008, down 8.3% in relation to the record figure of the first quarter of 2007 and 41.8% up on the €270.29 billion traded during the first quarter of 2006. The number of trades (the main indicator of stock market activity) during the first quarter of 2008 was 10.2 million, up 16% on the same quarter of the previous year.

The daily average number of trades during the first quarter of 2008 was 164,574, up 19.8% on the first quarter of 2007 when it was 137,428. The average daily amount traded in the first quarter of 2008 was €6.2 billion, down 5.34% on the first quarter of 2007.

A total of €95.19 billion was traded on SIBE in March 2008, whilst the number of trades was 2.7 million. It is worth mentioning that March 2008 had three trading days less than March 2007.

The daily average of trades in March 2008 was 144,013, 2.6% down on the daily average of March 2007 which was 147,899. The average daily amount traded in cash in March 2008 for its part was €5.01 billion, down 31.75% on the daily average of March 2007, which was €7.34 billion.

The value of trading on the ETF segment in the first quarter of 2008 came in at €3.03 billion, up 227% on the same period in 2007.

Equity Futures: contracts to March up 126%

The Derivatives area of BME traded 60% more in the first quarter of 2008 with a total of 17.4 million contracts. The Equity Futures compartment stands out, with 8.5 million contracts traded, up 126%, whilst Mini IBEX Options, with 2.2 million contracts, were up 74% against the same period of 2007.

In the first quarter of 2008 the Derivatives area reached a record high in terms of both the number of trades and orders for this period. Over 2 million operations were carried out, up 79% on 2007. With regard to the number of orders made in the first quarter, there were over 169 million, up 82% on 2007.

Compared with the same month last year volume traded in futures and options was up 30% in March, with 7.9 million contracts. Futures on shares stood out, with 4.9 million contracts, up 61%.

Warrants: number of issues admitted to March grows 85%

The number of warrant issues admitted to trading in the first quarter of 2008 grew to 2,785, up 85% in relation to the same period last year.

During the first quarter of 2008, the cash amount traded on the warrants and certificates market was €898 million, which represents a fall of 24% compared with the same period of the previous year. The number of trades was 176.656, down 12.6% than the first three months of the previous year.

During the month of March, the cash amount traded on the warrants and certificates market was €266 which represents a decrease of 41.8% on the same month of the previous year. The number of trades was 49.252, down 37.7% than in March 2007.

Corporate debt trading in March exceeded €118 billion

Corporate debt trading in March amounted to €118.05 billion, up 23.8% compared with the same month last year. For the whole first quarter, trading volume amounted to €332.03 billion, up 17.7% compared with the first quarter of 2007.

New issues admitted for trading in March represented €37.11 billion and for the whole first quarter of the year the figure was €121.75 billion. The outstanding balance grew to €772.38 billion at the end of the first quarter of this year, up 19.7% compared with the same month of the previous year.

The trading of public debt in March through BME's electronic platform for public debt trading was €5.12 billion. For the first three months of the year the figure amounted to €27.49 billion, up 3.3% on the same period of 2007.
