The Number Of Trades On The Spanish Exchange Increases By 10.9% In The First Five Months Of The Year - The Trading Volume On The Spanish Exchange Reaches €596.72 Bn To May

Equities

The number of trades in equities to May totalled 15.4 million, up 10.9% from the 13.9 million trades reported during the same period a year earlier. This reflects the robustness and dynamism of activity on the Spanish exchange. The number of trades in May was 2.45 million.

The trading volume in the first five months of the year came in at €596.72 bn, up 36.1% from that posted in the same period in 2006 and down 12% from the exceptional corresponding period in 2007. In May 2008 equities trading volume on the Spanish exchange reached €97.47 bn.

Between January and May trading on the ETF market came in at €3.56 bn, up 144% from the same period in 2007. In May trading volume came in at €225 million.

Futures and Options

Trading in BME's Derivatives business area to May grew by 85% from the same period last year to 29.5 million contracts. It is worth noting the heavy trading activity posted by Stock Futures, with 15.9 million contracts, up 254% from a year earlier and Mini IBEX Options, with 3.2 million contracts, up 51% from the same period in 2007. In May trading in Futures and Options reached 5.1 million contracts, up 95% from the same period in 2007; highlights include Futures on Stocks, with 3.1 million contracts.

Warrants and Certificates

The number of warrants admitted to trading between January and May 2008 exceeded 4,000.

In May the trading volume on the warrants and certificates market reached €203.4 million and the number of trades came in at 39,742.

Activity on this segment to May reached €1.36 bn, down 33.6% from the same period a year earlier while the number of trades was 262,850, down 21.45% from the same period in 2007.

Corporate Debt

Corporate Debt trading in May reached a record high of €211.57 bn, up 125.7% from the same month a year ago. The trading volume to May was €703.70 bn, up 55.7% from the previous year.

New issues in May came in at €38.25 bn, down 32.9% from the same month a year earlier. New issues from January to May totalled €209.51, down 24.9% from a year earlier.

The outstanding balance on the private fixed income market at the end of May was €802 bn, up 19% from a year earlier.

Public Debt

Trading volume on BME's Public Debt electronic trading platform stands at €6.24bn, exceeding the share represented by other trading platforms, at 78.60%.
