Top 5 Takeaways From 2016
1. Strong Index Performance
The S&P/TSXV Composite Index ended 2016 up 45% in the year and the S&P/TSX Composite Index was up almost 18%, first and third respectively among global peers.
2. Resurgence in the Mining Sector
Mining market capitalization on TSX/TSXV was up 55% ($279 billion) and equity capital raised was up 38% ($9.4 billion) year over year.
3. Record Year for Tech Listings
We saw a record number of new Technology and Innovation listings on TSX/TSXV in 2016, with 41 (5 TSX and 36 TSXV), including the first TSX medical marijuana IPO.
4. Corporate Listings on the Rise
While we saw a lower number of IPOs in 2016, new corporate listings via RTO, QT and spin-offs were up 49% over 2015, and there were 16 graduates to TSX in 2016 versus 9 in 2015.
5. #1 in New Oil & Gas Listings Globally
With 7 new listings and 1 graduate, TSX/TSXV led the world in new Oil & Gas listings in 2016. 34% of the Oil & Gas financings globally were done on TSX/TSXV, and the $10.7 billion raised by the sector on TSX/TSXV in 2016 represented 17% of the global capital raised in the sector.
