The Egyptian Exchange (EGX) Monthly Statistical Report December 2011

Listing

Total number of listed companies on the main market amounted to 213 at the end of December 2011. Meanwhile, the number of listed companies on Nilex reached 19 at the end of December 2011.

 

There were no new listed companies this month.

Turnover

Total number of trading days in December 2011 amounted to 21 days with a total value traded of US$ 1,705.59 million (LE 10,287.95 million). Value traded of the main market amounted to US$ 889.68 million (LE 5,366.44 million), of which shares, bonds and funds represented 94.85%, 5.15% and 0%, respectively. Unlisted securities i.e. Over the Counter trading reached US$ 814.29 million (LE 4,911.69 million), which represents 47.74% of total value traded for the month. Additionally, Nilex has recorded a trading value of US$ 1.63 million (LE 9.81 million) during the month.

 

This is in comparison to November 2011, when value traded of the main market amounted to US$ 1,252.40 million (LE 7,520.02 million), of which shares represented 62.93%, bonds 37.07% and funds 0%. In addition, the OTC trading amounted to US$ 55.24 million (LE 331.7 million) i.e. 4.22% of total trading (on- and off-exchange trading), which reached US$ 1,309.31 million (LE 7,861.80 million). Additionally, Nilex has recorded a trading value of US$ 1.68 million (LE 10.11 million) during the month.

 

Total volume traded of the main market for this month reached 918.10 million securities. Meanwhile, the total volume traded of the OTC market has reached 207.64 million securities. Nilex has recorded a trading volume of 2.63 million securities.

 

During December 2011, 333,822 transactions were concluded with an average of 15,896 trades per day, as opposed to 294,103 transactions and an average of 17,300 trades per day in November 2011.

 

Indices

EGX 30 index, the official market index, witnessed a decrease of 9.89% in December 2011 to reach 3622.35 points and witnessed a YoY decline of 49.28%.

Meanwhile, EGX 70 price index witnessed a decrease of 8.82% in December 2011 to reach 415.59 points and witnessed a YoY decline of 42.40%.

Moreover, EGX 100 price index witnessed a decrease of 8.93% in December 2011 to reach 643.07 points and witnessed a YoY decline of 44.86%.

Additionally, the Dow Jones EGX Egypt Titans 20 index witnessed a decrease of 9.08% in December, to close at 816.77 points on 29/12/2011 and witnessed a YoY decline of 46.71 %.

On the other hand, the S&P/EGX ESG index witnessed a decrease of 8.61% in December, to close at 597.96 points and witnessed a YoY decline of 46.26%.

Price Movements of Selected Shares

The ten most active stocks in the main market represented 58.69% of the total value & 52.86% of the total volume of shares traded for the month.

During the month of December, the top five gainers, on the main market, were (in descending order of price change) Egyptian International Tourism Projects (+78.32%), B-Tech (+19.46%), Gharbia Islamic Housing Development (+17.92%), National Development Bank (+16.67%) Egyptian Satellites (NileSat) (+6.43%).

The top five losers were (in ascending order of price change) Medical Packaging Company (-42.59%), Six of October Development & Investment (SODIC) (-30.51%), Ezz Steel (-27.01%), Egyptian Chemical Industries (Kima) (-23.06%) and Kafr El Zayat Pesticides (-22.84%).

Market Capitalization

Total market capitalization of shares in the main market amounted to US$ 48.67 billion (LE 293.59 billion) as of end of December 2011 compared to US$ 52.46 billion (LE 315.02 billion) in November 2011, representing a decrease of 5.7%. Meanwhile, Market capitalization for the companies listed on Nilex has reached US$ 167.4 million (LE 1,009.8 million) at the end of December 2011.

 

The bond capitalization recorded US$ 1.13 billion (LE 6.80 billion) for corporate bonds and US$ 38.390 billion (LE 231.57 billion) for government bonds at the end of December 2011 (Treasury Bonds according to Primary Dealers System). Meanwhile, the market capitalization of the Public Juristic Entities bonds amounted to US$ 828.93 million (LE 5 billion) at the end of December 2011.

Foreign Participation

In December 2011, foreign investors participated with 25.68% of the value traded of the main market, with a net outflow of portfolio foreign investment totaling US$ 76.34 million (LE 460.5 million).
