Thai Bourse Market Report For January - Daily Average Trading Volume Up 51 Pct Year-To-Date To USD 1.93 Bln - Market Cap At THB 12.54 Trillion, Up 6.01 Pct From End-2011 - Derivatives Trading Up 57 Pct Year-To-Date At 67,772 Contracts Per Day

The Stock Exchange of Thailand’s (SET) securities trading volume in January surged 51 percent from a year earlier as market sentiment was cheered by easing fears of European debt woes and the first increase of China’s economic growth in the fourth quarter after it had retreated for the previous seven quarters, signaling a recovery of the global economy.  
 
The SET main index ended January at 1,474.20 points, having risen 5.91 percent since the start of this year, while foreign investors were net buyers of Thai shares worth USD 498 million in January.
 
Combined average daily trading volume of SET and Market for Alternative Investment (mai) was at THB 58 billion (approx. USD 1.93 billion), or up 135.10 percent from a year earlier, while daily trading volume of derivatives rose 56.62 percent from the end of 2012 at 67,772 contracts per day.
 
Key highlights for January

Securities

  • Market capitalization of the SET was at THB 12.54 trillion (USD 418.09 billion), up 6.01 percent from the end of 2012, while market valuation of the mai was at THB 174.03 billion (USD 5.8 billion), up 30.83 percent.
  • The forward P/E ratio for the SET was at 13.59 times, up from 11.44 a year ago, but down from 15.50 times at the end of last year, while mai’s forward P/E ratio increased to 18.07 times from 10.33 a year earlier and 16.58 times at end-December.
  •  The dividend yield of the SET was at 2.65 percent at the end of January, while mai’s was at 1.32 percent.
  • Foreign investors were net buyers, purchasing Thai shares worth a net USD 498 million in January. They accounted for 19.27 percent of total trading volume in the month, down from 22.45 percent in December.
  • Listed companies raised funds through equity worth a combined THB 4.37 billion in January. Of that, THB 3.08 billion was raised from initial public offerings (IPOs) and THB 1.29 billion was raised from the secondary market.

Derivatives

  • Derivatives trading volume rose 56.62 percent from a month earlier and 141.15 percent from a year ago to an average of 67,772 contracts per day, due mainly to rising trading volume of Single Stock Futures and SET50 Index Futures.
  • Single Stock Futures traded 35,234 contracts per day on average, the highest volume since it listed in November 2008, due partly to the recent rule adjustment of position limit.
