Stock Exchange of Thailand Reports 2000 Performance

Mr. Vicharat Vichit-Vadakan, SET President, affirmed that the operational strategies implemented by the Exchange in 2000 have targeted strengthening the Thai stock market. These strategies have included proactive marketing not only to increase the types and numbers of products in the market, but also to expand the investor base. Other strategies enacted were designed to meet the demands of capital market players, namely, securities issuers securities companies and investors. In 2000, the SET carried out 23 measures to:
  1. rebuild the Thai equity market,
  2. cooperate more effectively with other organizations in the market,
  3. support the rebuilding of the Thai capital market; and
  4. develop the market to become the key to the expansion of a sustainable economy.
As for securities trading in 2000, at year end, the SET Index closed at 269.19 points, down by 212.73 points or 44.14% lower than year-end 1999. Total turnover volume was recorded at 60,502.55 million shares with a total turnover value of 923,696.85 million baht and an average daily turnover of 3,739.66 million baht. Market capitalization at year-end 2000 was 1,279,223.84 million baht, down by 41.7% from the previous year. As of 31 December 2000, there were 381 companies and 438 securities. Two new companies and 18 new securities, with a total offering price of 7,840 million baht, were listed on the Exchange in 2000. These new securities comprise two common shares, two preferred shares, 12 warrants, two derivative warrants, and two unit trusts. The total offering price of all securities listed in 2000 was 7,840.00 million baht.
