SIX Swiss Exchange: ETF Quarterly Statistics: 3rd Quarter Of 2015

This report provides detailed figures regarding the performance of SIX Swiss Exchange's ETF segment.

In the third quarter of 2015, SIX Swiss Exchange recorded an ETF trading turnover of CHF 22.4 billion, which equates to an increase of almost 7% relative to the previous quarter. This was revealed today in the latest edition of ETF Quarterly Statistics[PDF]. There were 250'935 ETF transactions carried out on SIX Swiss Exchange in the third quarter. The average transaction size in the first three quarters was CHF 93'788. The number of transactions smaller than CHF 10'000 rose by106'658 transactions versus the previous quarter.

Most-traded products

The most-traded ETF in Q3 2015 was again iShares SMI, with CHF 1'524 million traded, followed in second and third place by iShares Core S&P 500 UCITS and iShares S&P 500 UCITS (Dist), with CHF 834.7 million and 593 million traded, respectively. As in the second quarter, the fourth most-traded ETF was UBS ETF MSCI EMU hedged to USD on the equity markets of the European Monetary Union, with CHF 551.7 million traded. In sixth and seventh place of the Top 20 were UBS ETF - MSCI EM SF USD A and UBS ETF - MSCI EMU, with CHF 483.9 million and CHF 445.4 million traded, respectively. All Top 20 products track an equity basket; one quarter of the products are currency-hedged ETFs.

1'094 listed ETFs

During the turbulent market environment at the end of August, the ETF segment succeeded in further increasing its turnover on SIX Swiss Exchange and reaffirmed its attractiveness among investors. In order to offer investors the opportunity to benefit from high-performing equities in this volatile environment, Amundi launched the Amundi ETF S&P 500 Buyback ETF in EUR and USD at the beginning of the third quarter. ETF Securities also listed four Smart Beta ETFs on corporate and government bonds at the start of the third quarter.

During the third quarter of 2015, a total of 33 new ETFs were listed on SIX Swiss Exchange. At end-September 2015 there were 1'094 products in the ETF segment on the Swiss stock exchange (including 12 actively managed ETFs and 313 traded in other currencies) from 20 providers; 23 official market makers provide liquidity. The overwhelming majority of products - 854 - are based on an equity basket, followed by 125 ETFs that are focussed on fixed income products. The third-largest share according to asset class are commodity ETFs, with 90 products.
