SII Introduces First Certificate In Commodity Derivatives

Date 20/11/2008

The Securities & Investment Institute (SII) has announced the introduction of the first globally available benchmark qualification in Commodity Derivatives.

The announcement of the SII Certificate in Commodity Derivatives was made at the launch at the London Metal Exchange on 19th November in the presence of Martin Abbott, the Exchange’s Chief Executive and Simon Culhane FSI, Chief Executive of the SII.

The SII Certificate in Commodity Derivatives has been developed with input from leading exchanges including the London Metal Exchange, The Intercontinental Exchange, The National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, with support from the Futures and Options Association and Cass Business School. It is the first qualification developed specifically for those working in commodities markets.

The Certificate in Commodity Derivatives is a two hour multiple choice examination which can be taken via computer based testing at a time and place to suit the candidate. Results are available instantly.

The Financial Services Skills Council has recognised this qualification as meeting the National Occupational Standards for Wholesale Derivatives and has, therefore, placed it on the Recommended Examination List.

Simon Culhane FSI, Chief Executive of SII said, “Against a background of increasing volatility in the commodity markets, a number of our members and their firms have asked us to develop this new benchmark qualification. We are very pleased to have the support of the key exchanges, especially the London Metal Exchange and of the Futures and Options Association. The qualification is suitable for specialists engaged in analysing, trading, investment management or compliance oversight within the financial services, commodity or corporate sectors.”

The qualification can be adapted to suit local regulatory regimes overseas as the technical module can be combined with local regulatory papers to achieve the Certificate.

The Certificate in Commodity Derivatives consists of a technical unit and a regulatory unit, with combined study time totaling approximately 170 hours. Training providers offering the Certificate will include BPP and 7City.

Martin Abbott, Chief Executive of the London Metal Exchange said, “The Certificate in Commodity Derivatives has been developed with the input of the LME education and training team. We are delighted to support this initiative which will enhance education and provide qualifications to users of our market and the industry as a whole.”

Anthony Belchambers, Chief Executive of the Futures and Options Association said, “The FOA has worked closely with the Securities & Investment Institute on the development of its new Certificate for Commodity Derivatives. There is a pressing need for anyone wishing to pursue a career in the commodities sector – whether it is in trading, investment, risk management or compliance – to have a detailed understanding of what are fast becoming increasingly important markets. This new qualification and the accompanying workbook more than meets that need and we would commend it to anyone interested in the commodities sector.”
