Singapore Exchange Limited (SGX) announced today that both the traded value and volume of SGX-listed Exchange Traded Funds (ETF) set new monthly records for two consecutive months in April and May 2009.
Value record
Total trading value of SGX-listed ETFs was S$836.2 million for the month of May 2009. This exceeds the previous record of S$533.2 million traded in the month of April 2009 by 57%.
Total trading value from January-May 2009 was S$1.95 billion, 62% higher than in the same period last year.
Volume record
Total trading volume of SGX-listed ETFs was 121.4 million shares in May 2009. This exceeds the previous record of 85.7 million shares traded in the month of April 2009 by 42%.
Total trading volume from January-May 2009 was 316.2 million shares, more than double the 132.3 million shares in the first five months of last year.
Strong interest in the iShares MSCI India ETF, Lyxor ETF MSCI AC Asia Pacific ex-Japan and the two Straits Times Index (STI) ETFs – DBS Singapore STI ETF and streetTRACKS® Straits Times Index Fund – contributed to the record volume.

The jump in value of ETFs traded is especially significant, given that asset values this year are below last year’s highs. As part of our strategy to make SGX the Asian hub for investors to access the world, we continue to make new markets available to investors, including ETFs on Eastern Europe, Latin America and emerging markets launched this year. The wide range of ETFs on SGX makes them worthy of serious consideration in investors’ overall portfolio allocation. Our member companies have also produced comprehensive ETF wealth allocation reports1 for investors,” said Mr Andrew Ler, SGX Senior Vice President & Head of Private Investors.
SGX currently has 35 ETFs covering worldwide equity markets such as Singapore, India, North Asia, ASEAN, United States, Eastern Europe, Latin America and emerging markets as well as commodities, including gold.
